"Everyone's got some sort of genius, some sort of gift. I call it the song that you came to sing that your soul wants to sing and share with the world."
That is how I say it, and I mean it literally. You came here with something to give. Not a skill you have to go get. Something already in you.
The hard part is not finding the song. The hard part is that most people never get to sing it, at least not the way they want. This piece is about why that happens and what it looks like to start singing anyway.
Everyone has a song
Maybe you think you have nothing special. Then someone asks you about the one thing you know cold, and you talk for twenty minutes without noticing the time, and they walk away seeing their problem differently.
That is usually where the song is. It is the thing that comes so easily to you that you assume everyone can do it. The way you see a problem. The way you calm a room. The way you break something complicated into steps a person can actually follow.
You do not earn the song. You were born with it. What you earn is the courage to use it.
If you are reading this thinking "not me," pay attention to what people ask you for. Pay attention to what you would talk about for free, for hours, if nobody stopped you. That is the melody.
Here is a simple way to hear it. Take a piece of paper and write down three things people have thanked you for in the last year. Not the big public wins. The small ones. The advice that stuck. The time you saw something nobody else saw. The way you made a hard thing feel possible.
Now look for what those three have in common. There is usually a thread. That thread is not a job title or a skill on a resume. It is how you are wired to help. It was there long before anyone paid you for it, and it will be there after.
Most people never do this exercise because it feels like bragging. It is not. It is listening.
Most people never sing it the way they want
Here is what I have seen, over and over. People get conditioned and programmed into a reality that is ego driven. They learn early which parts of themselves are acceptable and which parts to put away.
So they take the safe path. They build a life that looks right from the outside. And the song gets quieter every year.
It is not that they do not have one. It is that they were taught to sing somebody else's.
You can hear it in how people talk about their own lives. "I'm just not the kind of person who..." "People like me don't..." "That's not realistic." Every one of those sentences was learned somewhere. Somebody said it first, and you repeated it until it sounded like your own voice.
The conditioning is not your fault. Nobody asked you whether you wanted it. But once you can see it, you get a choice you did not have before.
A lot of what you think of as "who you are" was handed to you. Your name is made up. Your identity is made up. And a lot of what made up that identity, you never consented to. I go deeper on that in The Identity You Never Consented To, because it is the first thing you have to look at if you want your own song back.
Singing it the way you want to
Notice I keep saying "the way you want."
Plenty of people are doing something close to their gift. The healer who spends all day on insurance paperwork. The teacher buried in admin. The coach who loves the work but hates how it is delivered. They are near their song, but they are not singing it their way.
Singing it the way you want means you decide the shape. How much. For whom. In what form. It means the gift gets to come out whole instead of in pieces between everything else.
That starts small. This week, look at your calendar and ask how many hours went to the thing only you can do. Then ask how many went to things you do because someone told you that is how it works. You do not have to change it all at once. You just have to see it.
Then take one step. Move one hour next week from the second list to the first. Protect it the way you would protect a paying client. See how it feels to spend an hour singing your own song on purpose.
A song is meant to be heard
A song you only sing in your head is still a song. But it was not given to you just for you.
The gift is meant to be shared. That is the whole point of it. Somewhere there is a person who needs exactly what you know, said exactly the way you say it. They cannot get it from anyone else, because no one else has your song.
Sharing it does not have to be big. It can be one person you help this week because you finally said what you know out loud. It can be a message you have been holding back. It can be the thing you teach for free every time someone asks, written down so more people can find it. The size is not the point. The sharing is.
I think about this a lot, because the worst outcome I can imagine is a person who carried something beautiful their whole life and never let anybody hear it. That is why I wrote Don't Die Without Sharing Your Gift. It is the long version of the reason I do what I do.
Where Freedom Builderz fits
Freedom Builderz was built so that people don't have to die without sharing their gifts to the world. That is basically it in a nutshell. Everyone comes here with a song to sing, and we get to build the stage they sing it from. For experts, the thing that most often keeps the song small is a business that only works when they are personally in the room, so the gift never reaches more people than one calendar can hold.
If you want to see where your business stands before you change anything, the Expert Score takes a few minutes.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find my purpose if I have no idea what it is?
Stop looking for something new and look at what already comes easily to you. What do people ask you for help with? What do you explain without effort that others find hard? Your purpose is usually hiding in the thing you undervalue because it feels natural. Mike calls it the song you came to sing. You already know the melody.
Does everyone really have a gift?
Mike believes so: everyone's got some sort of genius, some sort of gift. The gift is not always loud or obvious. It might be how you listen, how you teach, how you fix things, or how you make people feel safe. The question is not whether you have one. It is whether you have been allowed to use it.
Why do so many people never follow their purpose?
Most people get conditioned into a version of life that someone else designed. They learn which paths are safe, which ambitions are acceptable, and which parts of themselves to hide. Over time the song gets quieter. It does not disappear. It gets buried under an identity they never chose.
Is finding your purpose the same as finding your career?
Not always. Your song can show up in your work, your family, your faith, or the way you serve your community. For some people it becomes a business. For others it lives outside of one. What matters is that you share it the way you want to, instead of keeping it locked inside.
